Slow Stitching - Domestic Violence 1999-2020

I have stitched since I was a child, using multiple techniques of embroidery, appliqué, quilting and so on to produce dense and complex three-dimensional textile palimpsests. In all these works I weave in words, ideas, issues and experiences among the threads - some visible, some hidden under layers of fabric.

This series of six images - Domestic Violence 1999-2020 - stem from a particularly difficult period of my life, standing as acts of resistance, defiance, survival and positivity in the worst of circumstances. Each is made up of layers of other women’s textile work - lace, embroidery, lettering, fabric - some very ancient, some almost new. All are brought together with my own stitching, allowing this large group of anonymous women - many of whom will inevitably have shared my experiences - to stand together.
